heres hoping this makes some kind of sense....

the israelites had a long history, of how many years?

how long did each act of "violence" serve as a deterrent in keeping the israelites from sinning?

the first time was

Exo 32:26 Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the LORD'S side? let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him.
Exo 32:27 And he said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour.
Exo 32:28 And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.

how long did their repentance last before they were sinning against the Lord again?

humility is not to be confused for an empty vessel. humility does not parade its knowledge but rather sits at the feet of Jesus, never arriving, ever learning.

forced compliance (obedience) will only bring about a phony or insincere repentance. Their repentance never even began!

teresa,

Simeon and Levi were the ones who killed the men of Shechem in retribution for what had happened to their sister, Dinah.

Later, Simeon wanted to kill Joseph when he came to his brothers tending the flocks.

Jacob, in his dying prophesy concerning the twelve tribes, spoke of their violence.

Gen 49:5-7
5 Simeon and Levi are brethren; instruments of cruelty are in their habitations.

6 O my soul, come not thou into their secret; unto their assembly, mine honour, be not thou united: for in their anger they slew a man, and in their selfwill they digged down a wall.

7 Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel. KJV

At Mt. Sinai, the Lord destroyed lustful depravity and open idolatry through the power of violence through the tribe of Levi. But at Kadesh Barnea, the congregation distrusted the providence of the Lord concerning an external foe. In that trial at Kadesh Barnea, only the tribe of Judah, represented by Caleb and the tribe of Ephraim, represented by Joshua, along with Moses and Aaron, trusted the Lord to give them the victory against a much greater adversary.

So it is with us today. Our adversary appears much greater than we are, yet our Lord has promised us the victory over the beast, his image, mark and number of his name. Let us trust the Lord that he will give us the victory in his own ordained way and in his own appointed time (order of events). He has promised to use the flying insects to deliver us. But first we need for him to cut off our personal lusts through the power of his forgiveness, to wash our robes in his blood, then we can advance against the external foe and go and sin no more.
