Rock Stars

rockstar_nebi_story.jpg"God's love is meteoric, his loyalty astronomic, His purpose titanic, his verdicts oceanic. Yet in his largeness nothing gets lost; Not a man, not a mouse, slips through the cracks."  Psalm 36 The Message.  How do we know God is really that loving?  And how can that kind of love transform me for the better? Every person has the innate need to worship be it a rat, cow, rock star, or Higher Power. Emulation gives birth to personal preference and those preferences are cultivated like a finely kept garden. Our speech, dress, social circles and most powerful of all - morality is shaped by that which we admire.

Think about who or what you idolize and then see how much of that object of worship is reflected in every facet of your life. Think about how you run your personal program and see if it is not influenced by your idol of choice. When I choose to bow down to meteoric, astronomic, oceanic love, I will not be able to help but share it! So what happens when I serve self, worldly trappings, my career or a sick relationship? Scary thought yet our culture practices this kind of worship every day and is in pain because of it.

Daniel 3 tells us how King Nebuchadnezzar commanded his subjects to bow down to an impressive 90 foot idol expertly fashioned out of gold, "To you the command is given, O peoples, nations and {men of every} language, that at the moment you hear the sound of the horn, flute, lyre, trigon, psaltery, bagpipe and all kinds of music, you are to fall down and worship the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king has set up. But whoever does not fall down and worship shall immediately be cast into the midst of a furnace of blazing fire." Daniel 3:4-6.  Who did the idol represent? "The image was that of Bel, the Babylonian tutelary god; or rather, Nebuchadnezzar himself the personification and representative of the Babylonian empire, as suggested to him by the dream (Daniel 2:38), "Thou art this head of gold."  The people bowed down "in an attitude of devotion. Whatever the king approved of, they all approve of. There is no stability of principle in the ungodly." Jameison-Faussett-Brown Commentary.

People today are no different than they were thousands of years ago in that they are quick to bow down to whatever is popular or esteemed by the rich and powerful or just out of sheer force. Nebuchadnezzar's statue of gold was the "rock star" of the ancient world complete with musical instruments blasting away - a literal "rock" concert if you will. Now, imagine if the world worshiped God (as Jesus revealed Him to be) like it worships rock stars.  What kind of world do you see and do you like it?

This got me thinking about how worshipping things effects people's lives in general. I remember one of the stupidest things I've ever done was dying my hair blonde and shaving my eyebrows so I could look like a member of Marilyn Manson. I was really into him at the time, pretty much worshipping him. I think worshipping *anything* to too high of an extreme is kind've unhealthy. "Worship" or just making a hobby of something should be done in high moderation. For example, if I think of working out all the time, I'll start to get on steroids (I've been lifting for the past two months), get descouraged because I'm not big enough and in turn depressed, maybe workout too hard and injure myself, ect. Some things are good to worship in excess, but things like that are hard to come across. Even worshipping God too much can result in a bad case of self-righteousness when one thinks they're better than everyone else.

self-worship?

How much of what we worship is really a form of self-worship in disguise? We worship what we think reflects ourselves, our aspirations, our ideals, what WE think is "cool", etc. We worship ourselves -- enhanced, improved, elevated -- when we worship celebrities or rock stars or whatever who embody something to which we aspire, whether it's an attitude, a philosophy, a talent, a combination of all those, etc. We can even worship invisible gods, rivals for the Invisible God of Heaven, when we worship certain ideas, concepts, frameworks, etc.

Dear Dot and Tweek - I think you are both so right on. You've both given me much to think about, thank you :) Love, Stacie
