The Myth of a Christian Nation

A few of you have been raving about Gregory Boyd for many years. Apparently, some of us at HeavenlySanctuary.com weren't paying attention - myself included!

Recently, a good friend of Mark Merizan and myself sent us a book entitled "The Myth of a Christian Nation" authored by Pastor Boyd. I know Mark has been blown away by it and Stacie and I have not been able to put it down.

This week the team has been discussing future speakers for The Good News Tour and Brad forwarded the links to a Greg Boyd interview. We'd like to share that interview with the rest of you. In his new book, Pastor Boyd tries to clear up the myth that America is a Christian nation and that Christianity - specifically The Kingdom of Christ - is not affiliated with any earthly political party. Christ was not a Republican or a Democrat - rather His Kingdom was not of this world. Feel free to post some comments, and you can watch the rest of the interview by following this link.

Thank's Marco for putting this up, and thank you Stacie for all of your attention to the looks and content of the center section of HS.com.

What a great interview! The kingdom of God within and among his people should look like Jesus, which is to "come under people" by serving them, not by coming down on them with imposed rules and regulations. The face of Christianity to all outward appearances seems to be only about condemning homosexuality, placing 10 commandments in buildings, keeping certain words in the pledge of allegance, and fighting against abortion. What a perversion of what God has called his church to be! We are to love our friends and our enemies, to serve them, to not retaliate, and to live like Christ.

Ydale and Brad,

I've just received such a blessing from Greg's book, really. He hammers home what the Kingdom really looks like and it certainly isn't what most suspect. I would encourage all professed Christians to especially take a look at this book's theme.  It calls for not only deep self-examination but for action that is not of this world.

Love,

Stacie

The Myth of a Christian Nation

I just finished reading the book, "The Myth of a Christian Nation".  This is a fantastic book and a must read by anyone ineterested in the real "Good News".  it is also a challenging book.  Example, take abortion: We can take the easy route and use "Power Over" people and vote for the pro-life which costs the voter practically nothing.  Or we can take the Kindom of God approach and say, no matter what the government dictates, pro-life, pro-choice, or what ever, doesn't matter, people of the Kingdom take the Calvary approach and "bleed" for the expectant mother.  Not in a judgmental manner, but in a support manner.   This is what he calls, "Power Under", which causes internal changes to people, not by external force.

Dr. Boyd provided the example of a 18 y.o. with dreams of becoming a veterinarian, who becomes pregnant.  She is kicked out of the house by her "christian" parents.  She is befriended by a middle age devorced woman (call her Dot), who does not judge the young girl, or go through the moralistic interview, she just offers help.  If this young girl goes though with an abortions, Dot will help with the recovery (even though Dot believes a non-violent approach would be better).  If the girl wanted to give up the child for adoption, she would help.  If the girl decided to keep the child, Dot would help!  And this is what the girl did.  Dot provided a room in her basement.  Dot took out a second mortgage on her house to help with the costs.  The girl continued her education part time, and Dot helped with the raising of the baby daughter.   Dot showed how regardless of the vote on the political issue of abortion, Dot did the Kingdom approach of radical, outragious Love.  Dot took the hard path.  And in return this young girl's heart was changed by the love shown to her, really, love, for the first time.

Dr. Boyd's book is a great book on how we should all live the Kingdom.  Just think, if we all lived the Kingdom, we would not need any laws concerning abortion.  This is the power of God's Kingdom.
