As a Little Child

“Unless you become as a little child, you cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven.” Matthew 18:3. My mom is terminally ill. She is becoming less and less able to take care of her daily needs and more and more dependent on my father. In a way, as my mom’s condition deteriorates, she is becoming more like a child. This is not easy after leading a life of independence and self-sufficiency. As the aging process does this, it’s a letting go process—slowly we become less relevant to society, more dependent on others and finally in the end, we have to let go of everything and trust that we will be taken to safety somewhere in the unknown. In this process, I have witnessed God opening my mother’s eyes to better see her dependency on God.
I have a three year old daughter and I love her joy. She is always ready to laugh and always ready to share anything with anyone. When I take my daughter’s little hand and lead her across a busy intersection, she has no concern about the traffic. She knows her dad will lead the way safely because of my love for her. My mom has already placed her hand into Jesus’ hand. That is how I want to cross that major intersection that takes me from this life to the next.
Help me Lord
To remove all fears
To see Your love
Throughout the years.
Help me stand
On Your Rock and stay
Safe and secure
Forever and a day.
Though uncertainty
Is always there
I’ll never drift
Beyond Your care.
Help me choose
To always depend
On You alone
Till my very end.
That I may be
As a little child
Joy and laughter
Always ready to smile.
Remove my crutches
And earthly crowns
To lean on Your love
That knows no bounds.
To Your Father’s house,
Take my hand and lead me,
That where You are
I will always be.
