The Sacred Romance (Brent Curtis and John Eldredge)by Mark Marizan
The Sacred Romance was, for me, a revolution in my understanding of my relationship with God. It was both totally new and unexpected while at the same time something I have known in my heart of hearts all along. It is a book on understanding that God is pursuing us rather than us having to pursue God. It is a book about God's involvement on the most intimate levels of the smallest details of our lives. It is a book about how God really is "on our side" - not in a theoretical level, but in the deepest longings of our soul. That ache we all feel for something we do not know but feel we are missing - that is God speaking to us - the "Haunting" as the authors call it.
I remember just after I got the call that my dad had died, thinking that I was now an "orphan", wondering in my journal what it would have been like to really be an orphan, to never have known parents or family? And I imagined that such a child, without ever having known what it was he was missing, would have a longing for the love and belonging of a family. This is the "longing" that we all feel when we are quiet enough to admit it. And The Sacred Romance puts that feeling in its proper perspective - we are indeed orphans who have never know what it is to be in a home, yet sense that we were meant to have one. The Sacred Romance is God calling us home.
