Murder 101
Thursday, January 05 2006 @ 10:47 PM PST
A Pakistani father claims his daughter committed adultery so he hacked her to death in order to preserve family honor and as a lesson to her younger siblings. He felt that a strict punishment-even unto death-would prevent a ripple effect of bad behavior. He then decided why not make double sure the smaller children never repeat their older sister's alleged sin and went on to slay them as well. Rights groups believe that in order to curb such heinous crimes, perpertrators ought to receive a stricter punishment. Okay, something is seriously wrong with this picture.
Did murder change the young adulteress's heart if indeed she even committed such an act? And what did her siblings learn? Would a stronger punishement such as public hanging change this father's heart and mind? How about everyone looking on? Do you wish to live next door to someone that doesn't kill you because the law says not to or because he knows it is the wrong thing to do?
