Pulpit or Prescription?

enlighten.gif
When God decided He would become a man, it wasn't so He could land on planet earth and give some killer sermons.  His number one priority, His sole mission was to bring glory by revealing His Father's true character - a character of bountiful and rich love.  How would He do that?  Stand piously in the synagogues and spew out scripture after scripture?  Stand in the courtyards on some kind of divine soap-box accusing and blaming?

Maybe He would strap twelve times more scriptures to his wrists and forehead to prove how awesome His Father really is! Actually, we can turn to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John and see a Saviour who was bent on only one thing - healing the damage done by sin.   In John 9 He heals a man of blindness that goes beyond eyeballs.  In John 11 He resurrects more than a 3 day old dead body.  In chapter 12 we witness an annointing that transcended a jar of oil and the Master's brow.  Throughout the Gospels we see God taking battered world-torn souls as they are and offering them the prescription that brings wholeness.  It is the gift that looks us in the eye, touches our arm, takes our hand and grants peace. Are you feeling a little battered today?  Feeling like no matter what you do, not much is adding up?  That is because you live here and while you - along with me- endure great trial and hardship we can take hope in knowing we are not alone, God has not left us orphans!

"You've all been to the stadium and seen the athletes race.  Everyone runs, one wins. Run to win.  All good athletes train hard. They do it for a gold medal that tarnishes and fades.  You're after one that's gold eternally. I don't know about you, but I'm running hard for the finish line. I'm giving it everything I got. No sloppy living for me! I'm staying alert and in top condition. I'm not going to get caught napping, telling everyone else all about it and then missing out myself."  The Message 1Corinthians 9:24-27

I have enjoyed your article and hope to read more of such brief but concise documents.

There are so many of the modern preachers I know who present themselves in a way that make them appear unapproachable. As a result people perceive them to be too sanctimonious and only would smile when they mount the pulpit.  To them somberness is the definition of holiness, and when you appear tio be very easy going with others (thus vvery sociable) they think that you have lost moral values.

Frankly, the sermons preached when they mount the pulpit appears very powerful, well planned and exhaustive scriptural research, but I wonder whether power of the word comes through well articulated speeches or from the Holy Spirirt. Many a time preachers would want to entice their hearers with their expressions and gestures, but should all ministers emulate their Master they would have much impact on the flock.

Shall we all learn the humility of Christ in our service to humanity that we will by all means win many to Christ Jesus.
