Faith on Fire

How far would you go to stand up for your faith? 74 year-old Thich Chan Hy, poured gasoline over his body and lit it on fire, sacrificing his life in the name of religious freedom.

`My Life to Sacrifice'

Excerpts from the letter written by Thich Chan Hy on Dec. 23, 2003, the day before he set himself on fire in Charlotte:

"... Following are the three wishes that I, Bikkhu Thich Chan Hy, would like to apply my mind to:

"1. I wish that the whole population of Vietnam enjoy their religious freedom and be free to choose their beliefs.

"2. That the whole Vietnamese nation enjoy freedom and democracy.

"3. That our Vietnamese fatherland keep both its territorial integrity and its territorial waters. ...

"Dear Master, having only modest talent and being weak in body, I only have my life to sacrifice in order to see the above three wishes come to fulfillment some day."

Slightly vague question. How much would I sacrifice to *demonstrate* my faith or to make sure I still had it? And what kind've faith? Just a belief in capital punishment or the bill of rights or something? Heck no. I wouldn't set my clothes on fire for that -- there's other, more effective ways of getting your point across other than martyrdom.

Now, having my belief taken away from me, literally, making me believe the opposite? That I might sacrifice my life for. Some people don't understand the difference between saying something and meaning something. Some people, therefore, would rather die than say something imparticular, which is ridiculous. But changing the actual way you think via like, brain surgery or some other miracle like hypnosis or torture, I would sacrifice my life for that not happening if the belief in question was not loving a woman I had been in a relationship for a long time or not loving any children I might have. I really consider those to be the only two important things to live for, and as far as belief is concerned, I would probably be willing to die for them. Hard to say though right now cuz I'm experiencing neither situation.

I'm not conviced that suicide is ever an answer. I think sometimes it's the easy way out.

Seems to me that if he was not afraid to die, his life would have been much better spent trying to effect change. So, "they" end up killing him, at least maybe he could have made some changes first or enrolled more people in the cause or something. But to just burn yourself up to make a statement? As Dawn said that is more likely to cause people to shake their heads and say, "What a nut case." Seems like a much more powerful statement is made by martyrdom.
