Site problems resolved -- HS admin boot camp
Friday, August 27 2004 @ 07:40 PM PDT
It was a difficult 24 hours of recovery for us due to the move of our site from one machine to another at the hosting facilities, but we're back on our feet now. We apologize for the outage.
The whole ordeal was a sort of HS admin "boot camp" for me. In the pressure situation of having the site down, I needed to not just rely on my own experience and intuitions, but also on others: on Marco to orient me, and our provider's staff to answer our unanswered questions and fix things that were beyond our control.
Since this role is a mostly new experience for me, there was a lot of cautiously trying things out, and checking back with Marco to make sure my plans were sane. The tensest moment was when I finally had to replace the whole site, which had reverted back to the state it was in August 24th, with a backup we had saved on the 26th, just minutes before the switchover to the new machine. But as you can see, it worked out.
In the end, though, as stressful as dealing with the outage was, when it was all over with, it was a fun and educational experience. (Yes, I know: we computer geeks have a really warped sense of fun.)
I'm really happy, and feel privileged to take on the responsibility of administering this site. I'm excited to see what God has done here so far, have enjoyed getting to know you guys a bit through the forums, and look forward to enabling this work to continue and grow by assisting with the tech stuff behind the scenes.
