The Law Can't Save Us!

The Law cannot save us. Following the Ten Commandments in an attempt to receive salvation leads to a meaningless religion, and does absolutely nothing for the heart. It's very apparent in Christ's teachings that what God asks from us is obedience that stems from a cheerful heart and an intelligent understanding of how God runs His universe. The Law of Love is the epitome of freedom, and God would have it no other way. He wants perfect freedom for all of His children. Why don't we kill? Is it because God has said so in the Ten Commandments, or because we agree with God, and we would never do it?

There is a big difference between the two. Do we still need to be told to remember The Sabbath day, or would we never forget? In his letter to The Galatians, Paul writes these words 3:19-24 (NLT):

"Well then, WHY was the law given? It was given to show people how guilty they are. But this system of law was to last only until the coming of the child to whom God's promise was made. And there is this further difference. God gave his laws to angels to give to Moses, who was the mediator between God and the people. Now a mediator is needed if two people enter into an agreement, but God acted on his own when he made his promise to Abraham. Well then, is there a conflict between God's law and God's promises? Absolutely not! If the law could have given us new life, we could have been made right with God by obeying it. But the Scriptures have declared that we are all prisoners of sin, so the only way to receive God's promise is to believe in Jesus Christ. Until faith in Christ was shown to us as the way of becoming right with God, we were guarded by the law. We were kept in protective custody, so to speak, until we could put our faith in the coming Savior. Let me put it another way. The law was our guardian and teacher to lead us until Christ came. So now, through faith in Christ, we are made right with God. But now that faith in Christ has come, we no longer need the law as our guardian. So you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus. And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have been made like him. There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male or female. For you are all Christians--you are one in Christ Jesus. And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham. You are his heirs, and now all the promises God gave to him belong to you."

Now, within our church, there has been a difference of opinion over "which law" Paul is talking about? Most traditionalists claim that he isn't talking about the Ten Commandments, but rather, the ceremonial law. Could it be The Decalogue (the moral law), too? The following evidence from Ellen White can be found in Selected Messages I, pp 234 to 236:

"The law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith" (Gal. 3:24). In this scripture, the Holy Spirit through the apostle is speaking especially of the moral law. The law reveals sin to us, and causes us to feel our need of Christ and to flee unto Him for pardon and peace by exercising repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. An unwillingness to yield up preconceived opinions, and to accept this truth, lay at the foundation of a large share of the opposition manifested at Minneapolis against the Lord's message through Brethren {E.J.} Waggoner and {A.T.} Jones. By exciting that opposition Satan succeeded in shutting away from our people, in a great measure, the special power of the Holy Spirit that God longed to impart to them. The enemy prevented them from obtaining that efficiency which might have been theirs in carrying the truth to the world, as the apostles proclaimed it after the day of Pentecost. The light that is to lighten the whole earth with its glory was resisted, and by the action of our own brethren has been in a great degree kept away from the world.

The law of ten commandments is not to be looked upon as much from the prohibitory side, as from the mercy side. Its prohibitions are the sure guarantee of happiness in obedience. As received in Christ, it works in us the purity of character that will bring joy to us through eternal ages. To the obedient it is a wall of protection. We behold in it the goodness of God, who by revealing to men the immutable principles of righteousness, seeks to shield them from the evils that result from transgression.

We are not to regard God as waiting to punish the sinner for his sin. The sinner brings the punishment upon himself. His own actions start a train of circumstances that bring the sure result. Every act of transgression reacts upon the sinner, works in him a change of character, and makes it easier for him to transgress again. By choosing to sin, men separate themselves from God, cut themselves off from the channel of blessing, and the sure result is ruin and death.

The law is an expression of God's idea. When we receive it in Christ, it becomes our idea. It lifts us above the power of natural desires and tendencies, above temptations that lead to sin. "Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them" (Ps. 119: 165) -- cause them to stumble.

There is no peace in unrighteousness; the wicked are at war with God. But he who receives the righteousness of the law in Christ is in harmony with heaven. "Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other" (Ps. 85: 10).

This was originally sent to Uriah Smith, who was editor of The Review at the time. It was never published, and it wasn't until over 50 years later that The White Estate printed it in Selected Messages. Do we understand what is being said? All law, including The Ten Commandments, were given as an emergency measure. How sad it was when God had to gather His children together and shake mountains, put a ring of fire around the mountain, etc., and then ask all of his children to stop killing each other, stop stealing from each other, and to stop worshipping pieces of wood and rock! Yet, have we learned anything from this? Many of us still want to immortalize Mount Sinai instead of realizing that it can't save us. Only trusting in Jesus Christ, who was God, can we grow up and start doing what is right because it is right. It's impossible to command and compel love. You can't enforce love. Love is the fulfillment of The Law, and only those that do what is right because it is right, because they agree with God, enter into TRUE obedience. That's not to say The Law is a bad thing. If you don't kill people because The Law says not to, then praise God that He gave law. Unfortunately, it's not accredited to you as righteousness, and according to God, you aren't really entering into obedience.

Read the following from Mrs. White in Christ's Object Lessons, page 97:

"The man who attempts to keep the commandments of God from a sense of obligation merely--because he is required to do so--will never enter into the joy of obedience. He does not obey. When the requirements of God are accounted a burden because they cut across human inclination, we may know that the life is not a Christian life. True obedience is the outworking of a principle within. It springs from the love of righteousness, the love of the law of God. The essence of all righteousness is loyalty to our Redeemer. This will lead us to do right because it is right--because right doing is pleasing to God."

The implications of this should rock the foundation of our church! The Law cannot perform heart surgery. We don't turn to The Sabbath to have our moral delinquency changed! We turn to God! Only The Father, Jesus Christ, and The Holy Spirit can perform the proper medical procedure within our hearts and minds to help us enter into the joy of obedience! Sin isn't a behavior that can be altered by a set of rules. Oh no, it's a disease! We must be healed so that one day, when God unveils His life giving glory, we are able to live in it. This is something The Law cannot do for us! The Law, when used properly, protects us until we find our need for a doctor. When The Law is used incorrectly, it reaps havoc and destruction on those that misrepresent it. Praise God that He has given us The Evidence that we need to come to Christ. Paul knew what he was talking about when he penned these words in 1st Timothy verses 5 to 11 (NLT):

"The purpose of my instruction is that all the Christians there would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and sincere faith. But some teachers have missed this whole point. They have turned away from these things and spend their time arguing and talking foolishness. They want to be known as teachers of the law of Moses, but they don't know what they are talking about, even though they seem so confident. We know these laws are good when they are used as God intended. But they were not made for people who do what is right. They are for people who are disobedient and rebellious, who are ungodly and sinful, who consider nothing sacred and defile what is holy, who murder their father or mother or other people. These laws are for people who are sexually immoral, for homosexuals and slave traders, for liars and oath breakers, and for those who do anything else that contradicts the right teaching that comes from the glorious Good News entrusted to me by our blessed God."

God isn't a legalist. He gave us Law because we needed it. If you want to know who is ready for Heaven, see what happens when you take the rules away!

Amen Brother! I've been preaching this for years and have a great study on the clean line between the Old Covenant and New Covenant. The term "the Law" in Galatians, Romans, and Colossians is in reference to the Old Covenant, that God made with Israel, that lasted from Sinai to the Cross.

In trying to save our sacred cow (the expression of God's law in the 10 commandments) we dissect Paul's writings and make the law to be just the ceremonial or circumcision or feast or whatever. If we would realize that when Jesus talked about the law and the prophets testifying of Him, He was talking about the Writings of Moses, the Pentateuch, the first five books of he bible, and the rest of the covenant with Israel related in the major and minor prophets.

God's original covenant, the New Covenant, was from the beginning to all mankind, that God would provide a Savior, a new priest/king to take the place of Adam, for all mankind.

The Old Covenant was made with Abraham's descendants to give context to that 2nd Adam. Without it we couldn't pin point who that Savior, that God promised to send, was. There would be no context for Christ or proof that He was the one that God sent to save us without God's covenant with Israel.

God Bless, Scott

Scott,

We hold onto law because we are scared of being free. I fear that many of us have become institutionalized.

I agree. Another reason we hold onto the law is because we, as Adventists, think we can't prove our Sabbath doctrine without the support of the 10 commandments.

Everything aspect of the Old Covenant pre-existed in another form before Sinai. There was a Sanctuary (in heaven, probable Christ Himself), a sacrifice, a priesthood (that of Adams at creation), clean and unclean, a moral law (in it's original form of love), and a type of the ceremonial law (they represent God's remedy for sin found in the Sabbath at creation)

All of these symbols or shadows of salvation were incorporated into God's covenant with Israel, but non were unique or original to the Hebrews. And salvation was never found, even for the Israelite, in keeping them.

Why the law (the Old Covenant)? It was given until the seed should come to whom all the promises were made. Salvation was always, for every man, in every age, attained through faith in Christ, by God's grace.

In Christ, Scott

Very good point! The Sabbath DOES NOT NEED A LAW TO PROVE ITS EXISTANCE. In fact, I think it's pretty clear from scripture that those that honor the sabbath because they feel legally obliged end up making a mockery out of freedom and liberty.

Insightful thoughts, Scott. Glad to see you here!

I've been floating around Adventist chat rooms for about three months and it's a mess out there. It's great to see someone believes in the NT. These "Historic Adventists" are about to drive me crazy. They pit Ellen against the Bible and create the most bad news gospel that one can imagine. I bet their navel gets sore. Thanks for loving Jesus.

Scott,

I think you'll love hanging out here. We hope you stick around. The forums are starting to get pretty active, and there are some private forums you might want to look at. We have a private forum on the heavenly sanctuary and it is quite raw - we are just throwing stuff around to see if it fits together, etc. If you'd like, I can give you access.

NO JUDGING US though ;-) <wink>
